About Us

King Edward School Sport Partnership aims to give young people in Aston and the Perry Barr district the opportunity to access high quality physical education and school sport.

We are one of 11 School Sport Partnerships in Birmingham working with schools to inspire, educate and empower through sport, so that all young people can reach their potential.  We believe that physical education and school sport can be used as a driver to improve lifestyle choices and develop life-long participation.  Working with partner primary and secondary schools gives us the opportunity to promote social inclusion, leadership, physical literacy, student wellbeing and competition and well as working with staff to ensure all pupils receive a quality experience which prepares them for their next steps in life.

The King Edward School Sport Partnership has existed for fourteen years. During the first nine years, Aston was the sports college at the hub of a partnership of secondary and primary schools. The School Sports Partnership, SSP, was a network: the Partnership Development Manager (PDM) would lead the partnership with the help of the School Sports Coordinators (SSCo) based in the secondary schools. Each secondary school worked with a family of primary schools and liaised with Primary Link Teacher (PLT).

When the funding was cut in 2012, the School Games programme was introduced, the PDM in some schools becoming the School Games Organiser (SGO). SGOs are part-time posts, their main tasks being to plan and support a program of level 2 competitions, leading to the level 3 events hosted by the City.

In 2012 schools were offered the opportunity to continue to be supported by Aston through a package of continuing professional development and coaching programmes. A number of schools took up this opportunity and we have continued to grow, developing our support package and increasing the number of schools working with us.

The primary schools who are presently part of the partnership are Aston Tower, Benson, Bordseley Village, Brookfield, Chilwell Croft Academy, Cromwell, Grove, James Watt, Lozells, Mansfield Green, Manor Park, Nechells, Paget, Sacred Heart,  St Joseph's, St Francis', Welford, The Oval, Westminster Primary and Canterbury Cross Primary School. The partnership is now run by the SGO/PDM.  Apart from encouraging games in schools, we work with a number of sports coaches and are constantly looking for ways to further develop and support the schools.

We also have a strong secondary offer and partner with Aston Manor Acadmey, Broadway Academy, Eden Boys, Eden Leadership Acadmey, Prince Albert High School, Nishkam, Holte School, Jewellery Quarter, Heartland Acadmey, King Solomon IBS and King Edward Handsworth Girls' School.
